Proposed rule published to list Cedar Key mole skink as an endangered species.
After reaching an agreement with Center for Biological Diversity in 2022 to resolve a lawsuit challenging the 2018 determination that listing of the Cedar Key mole skink under the Endangered Species Act was not warranted, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) on August 8, 2024 published a proposal to list the species as endangered and to designate 2,713 acres of critical habitat in Levy County, Cedar Keys, Florida. FWS determined that the Cedar Key mole skink was endangered due to threats associated with climate change, specifically sea level rise, increased high tide flooding, and increased intensity of storm events.
