The Australian Competition Tribunal's reviewed the proposed acquisition of Suncorp Bank by ANZ. This follows an initial determination by the ACCC, and both ANZ and SGL sought a review by the Tribunal. The Tribunal's task was to make its own findings on whether the acquisition should be authorized, considering information provided to the ACCC, referred to in their determination, and supplementary details. A central aspect of the review involved analyzing the potential impact on competition in several key markets, namely the national home loans market, and the local or regional banking markets in Queensland for agribusiness and SME customers . The Tribunal also considered counterfactual scenarios, including a situation where Suncorp Bank was not sold and a potential merger between Bendigo and Suncorp Bank. Ultimately, the Tribunal's decision would rest on whether it was satisfied that the proposed acquisition would not likely have the effect of substantially lessening competition in any of these relevant markets. The review also involved submissions from various parties, including ANZ, Suncorp Group, Bendigo, and the ACCC, each presenting their arguments regarding the competitive landscape and potential public benefits or detriments of the acquisition.
