The claimants in this long-running group litigation are thousands of individuals from the Bille and Ogale communities in the Niger Delta, Nigeria. They allege that operations by Shell PLC and its Nigerian subsidiary caused persistent oil spills, leading to extensive environmental damage, and, consequently, damage to livelihoods. Thus, through the UK courts, the claimants seek to hold Shell liable for environmental harm caused abroad.

The case has been managed under a Group Litigation Order (GLO) since May 2022, and numerous hearings have taken place to deal with case management issues. On the issue of how a claim is proved, the Court of Appeal delivered an important judgment in December 2024. It held that the "global claim" approach (i.e., claimants having to prove that Shell was responsible for all pollution causing the environmental contamination, and if any other sources of pollution contributed to their losses, each claim would fail) was not appropriate - rather, the “lead case” approach should be used: a smaller number of representative claimants would guide the overall litigation. 

Another preliminary issues hearing took place in June 2025, regarding aspects of Nigerian law. The High Court judgement was handed down on June 20, 2025 addressing the structure of the five GLO claim groups (Bille Individuals; Bille Community; Ogale Community; Ogale Individuals; Additional Ogale Individuals). Nigerian subsidiary name - formerly: The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) and now renamed Renaissance Africa Energy Company Ltd (post‑divestment). The full trial is expected to take place in late 2026.

Climate change can have a range of impacts on technological system. Extreme weather events can cause infrastructure failures like power outages or damage to roads and bridges, as well as the impacts from waste following natural disasters. Human activities also cause technological impacts, such as the risks posed by oil spillage and leaks.

Any substance with chemical properties that can cause physical harm to people or damage the environment, including ammonia, carbon monoxide, phosphine, chlorine, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, pesticides, dioxins, microplastics, benzene, asbestos, aflatoxins, fluoride, methanol, and toxins from marine sources.

Slow onset events evolve gradually from incremental changes over many years or from increased frequency or intensity of recurring events. As defined in the Cancun Adaptation Framework (2010), slow onset events include risks and impacts from rising temperatures, desertification, biodiversity loss, land and forest degradation, glacial retreat, ocean acidification, sea level rise, and salinization.

Geohazards are adverse geological phenomenon's that are capable of causing widespread damage or loss to property, life and the environment, such as earthquakes, volcano eruptions and tsunamis. Climate change can increase the frequency and severity of some geohazards, such as landslides, and soil erosion.
