The City of Port Isabel, Texas, the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, and Sierra Club filed a petition for review in the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals challenging a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) order on remand from a 2021 D.C. Circuit <a href="https://climatecasechart.com/case/vecinos-para-el-bienestar-de-la-comunidad-costera-v-federal-energy-regulatory-commission/">decision</a> that found that FERC failed to adequately analyze climate change and environmental justice impacts of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal and related pipeline and other facilities on the Brownsville Ship Channel in Cameron County, Texas. FERC addressed these issues, considered modifications to the proposed project, and issued an amended order granting authorizations for the project. Regarding climate change, FERC disclosed “[f]or informational purposes,” FERC staff’s estimate of the social cost of greenhouse gases associated with emissions from construction and operation of the facilities, but FERC said that because there were no accepted tools or methods for determining significance of the emissions, it would not characterize the emissions as significant or insignificant. FERC also conducted a new analysis of environmental justice impacts and found that impacts on environmental justice populations would be disproportionately high and adverse but that only cumulative visual impacts would be significant.

Climate change can have a range of impacts on technological system. Extreme weather events can cause infrastructure failures like power outages or damage to roads and bridges, as well as the impacts from waste following natural disasters. Human activities also cause technological impacts, such as the risks posed by oil spillage and leaks.

Slow onset events evolve gradually from incremental changes over many years or from increased frequency or intensity of recurring events. As defined in the Cancun Adaptation Framework (2010), slow onset events include risks and impacts from rising temperatures, desertification, biodiversity loss, land and forest degradation, glacial retreat, ocean acidification, sea level rise, and salinization.

Heavy precipitation refers to any form of weather where substances fall from the sky, including rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

Geohazards are adverse geological phenomenon's that are capable of causing widespread damage or loss to property, life and the environment, such as earthquakes, volcano eruptions and tsunamis. Climate change can increase the frequency and severity of some geohazards, such as landslides, and soil erosion.
