Complaint filed.
Earth Island Institute filed a lawsuit alleging that a beverage company that is "one of the largest plastic-producing companies in the world" made false and misleading representations and omissions regarding the environmental sustainability of its products and business practices in violation of the District of Columbia Consumer Protection Act. The complaint alleged that the company "cultivates an environmentally friendly image for consumers who wish to avoid harming our planet in order to motivate climate-concerned consumers to continue to purchase its products and services" but makes "significant and ongoing contributions to plastic pollution" and contributes to "depletion of natural water resources." The complaint's allegations included that plastic production involves processes that emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases and that dumping, incinerating, recycling, or composting certain plastics releases carbon dioxide.
